Comparison of Geographical statistics for the Pitt Rivers Museum's collections up to 1945

General Introduction to comparative statistics

[article ID:56]

These documents are an attempt to look at the statistics from a global perspective, comparing and contrasting each continent against each other to see if any interesting aspects are discovered by this method. Because each continents' entries were questioned in the same way it is possible to directly compare like with like in the time frame between 1884 and 1945.

Comparative statistics sections:

[article ID:57]

Introduction

Colonial status of collections (associated with Parts 1 - 3)

Comparison of size of collections by country

Comparison of country's collections by class of objects

Comparison of pattern of acquisition by decade

Comparison of the archaeological and ethnographic collections (associated with Appendices 4 - 5)

Overview of UK collections and their importance to the PRM collections as a whole up to 1945

The majority of the graphs found in this section and the following ones are to be found in the relevant continental statistics, other new graphs are to be found in the two Excel files relating to the comparative statistics.

Overview of the collections as a whole:

[article ID:58]

The continents:

Africa

Americas [North South and Middle separately reviewed within continental statistics]

Asia

Australia

Europe

Oceania [Micronesia, Melanesia and Polynesia reviewed separately within continental statistics]

Breakdown of global statistics between continents:

[article ID:59]

Total number of objects up to 1945: 179,765

Africa - 47,114

Americas: 15,715

Asia (including SE Asia) - 40,232

Australia - 18,465

Europe - 41,898

Oceania - 17,088

Other [unknown continent] - 1,091

Note that there is a double-counting between continents which means that totalling up the continents will NOT give the total number of objects given above.

How much of the overall 2003 PRM objects collections came in by 1945:

What was the pattern of acquisition between 1884 and the present (actually 2001) into which ESRC time frame fits:

Note that this graph was produced as part of the DCF-funded Cataloguing the Collections project and therefore it does not necessarily accurately reflect all the figures given elsewhere

List of all the countries that were included in the statistics:

The countries that are excluded from the statistics, are excluded because there are no objects provenanced to that place in the collections.
