Notes for the following table:
* This column is calculated by taking away the global single search figure (ie where no geographical provenance is suggested in the search, just the class) from the total of all the continents figures for that class.
** The next column works out these differences as percentages to see how significant they are (ones over 5 per cent different are marked in red).
*** The percentages which are shown immediately after each continental column are the percentages for each continent set against the global total of all continents. It would, of course, have been possible to work out these percentages against the global single search per class figure (the last column on the table) but this would have given different figures which would have totalled more than 100 per cent. For this reason we have not bothered to work out the individual percentages for the 6 classes (carving, commemoration, photographs, reproduction, theatre, and trade). Note that these classes might have been expected to have a large number of continental double-counting as they (or at least carving, photograph and reproduction) are the most likely to be either very imprecisely provenanced or to have been given bulk entries.
Figures marked in colour (except for red, explained above) in the below table are significantly lower or higher than the percentage attributed to each continent as a whole would suggest was likely for each class, ie you would expect, if all classes reflected the overall number of objects from the continent, that each African class total would be about 25.9 per cent of the overall global figure, figures which are below 20 per cent are marked in green, figures above 30 per cent are marked in blue. The significant levels have been arbitarily set (by me) as:
Africa - above 30 per cent, below 20 per cent (+ or - 5 per cent)
Americas - above 11 per cent, below 5 per cent ( + or - 3 per cent)
Asia - Above 26 per cent, below 18 per cent (+ or - 4 per cent)
Australia - Above 13 per cent, below 7 per cent (+ or - 3 per cent)
Europe - Above 27 per cent, below 19 per cent (+ or - 4 per cent)
Oceania - Above 12 per cent, below 6 per cent (+ or - 3 per cent)
Unknown - Above 1 per cent
