1821 - HBC control Northwest Territories

1869 – new Dominion of Canada buys out HBC with much of

Prince Rupert's Land becoming Manitoba

New Brunswick

[1604 – French; New Brunswick combines with Nova Scotia to form French colony of Acadia]

*1713 – Acadia ceded to Britain

*1759 – becomes British

  1763 – named Quebec

1867 – named Quebec; enters new Dominion of Canada

Vancouver Island

Note too that the legal definition of the Dominion Status granted to Canada in 1867, Australia in 1901, New Zealand in 1907 and South Africa in 1910, was also hazy until 1931, when the Statute of Westminster established it as synonymous with total independence. The dates of accession to Dominion Status can thus be assumed to be the dates of independence.

3. Total number of objects from geographical region

[article ID:48]

15,775

Overall 9 per cent of the PRM collections up to 1945 come from the Americas as a whole, North America is 47 per cent of the Americas collections, South America 44 per cent and Middle America the smallest in percentage terms at 9 per cent.

4. Total number of objects for geographical region divided into archaeological and ethnographic objects

[article ID:49]

Definite archaeology - 6,640

Definite ethnography - 8,365

Archaeology or Ethnography - 710

From which it can be seen that the Americas collections in general are richer in archaeological objects than are all the global collections of the PRM [42 against 34 per cent], but have nearly the same proportion of ethnographic collections [slightly less at 53 rather than 56 per cent]. The figures are made up of a smaller than global figure for those items which are not clearly archaeological or ethnographic (global 10 per cent of collections, but only 5 per cent in the Americas).

South America has the fewest number of uncertain ethnographic or archaeological items, North America the largest. North America also has the largest number of ethnographic objects proportionally and the least archaeological, Middle America has the largest proportional archaeological collections and the smallest ethnographic ones (these two are almost mirror images of each other) with South America having the second largest ethnographic and archaeological collections proportionally

5. Total number of objects obtained from each country of region

Those countries with no objects are excluded from the lists

As might be expected Canada and the USA dominate the Americas collections but Peru also makes a good showing, the very large number of unspecifically provenanced North America objects is noticeable (this is probably the collection of objects in the museum with the worst provenancing apart from the ones from Africa that just say West Africa etc).

The USA collections are a quarter of the total Americas collection, Peru also represents a sizeable percentage of the total at 18 per cent. 10 per cent of the total Americas collections are only provenanced as North American rather than more accurately. The majority of South America with the exception of Peru) and all of Middle America represent only just over a third of the Americas collections at 36 per cent. NB this pie chart is only possible because there is no overlap or double counting between the countries

6. Total number of objects accessioned from each country broken down into decades

1920s - 3,563

1930s - 2,090

1940 - 1945 - 1,202

The main variation between these figures for different regions and for the continent as a whole are the figures for 1910s and 1920s which either increase one to the other or decrease depending

Total for countries outside British Empire: 12,975

Of course none of North America counted as part of the British Empire in the relevant time period except [just possible] you could argue that Canada was in which case:

The highest regional percentage definitely from parts of the British Empire is Middle America at 16 per cent (unless one counts Canada in which case that is the highest at 18 per cent). The lowest is South America at 11 per cent. Adding Canada as a colonial country makes a great deal of difference to the statistics, not surprisingly, increasing the percentage from the British Empire from 7 to 19 per cent

NB the classes in red are those that vary from the global ranking for the top 10

Comparing the global statistics with Americas as a whole shows that Death and Textile are both more common in the Americas collections than they are globally [Death up from 14 to 6 and Textiles up from 11 to 6]. Clothing is less common than globally [down from 8 to 10] as are ornaments and beads [down from 3 to 7] and Music [down from 10 to 15]. Weapons are more common in the Americas than tools unlike the global situation

Definite tools and weapons [see above]
