Dealers and Auction Houses etc up to 1945

[article ID:557]

This is a list of all the dealers and auction houses that the Museum dealt with between 1884 and 1945 that we can identify (or identify as a possibility). We compiled the first draft of the list by transferring over all entries on the field collector and PRM source tables which suggested that the individual or organisation was a dealer / auction house etc. This list was added to by generating indices of the other owners and prm source fields for all the entries between 1884 and 1945 which were purchased and then eliminating the names of individuals who were not dealers who happened to sell their collections to the Museum, leaving a list of auction houses, dealers, shops etc. Some of these names are already included in the field collectors, other owners or PRM source information. We have probably missed a few possible dealers by this method (because some have not been properly identified as dealers or because they came via someone else (as PRM source) and the fact they were dealers was not spelt out but we think it is likely to be the most comprehensive method short of examining each entry separately.

We have recalculated all the total number of objects based on the up to 1945 database. If at all possible the number in the number of objects column is based on the count when searching for the name of the dealer in the PRM source [of course for many of them there will be different counts depending on whether you count using the field collector, other owner or PRM source field]. Please note that for those people which were identified as other owners only and whose objects were donated by another source the total number of objects was calculated using the on-line database (it is not likely that it varies from the up to 1945 for these people but we have not checked).

Fentons have been added to the end of the table in case Robert Day turns out to be a secondary collector and not a dealer.

We first constructed a database for all the items that were purchased up to 1945, these contain details of a total of 37,929 [1] objects (21 per cent of the total number of objects obtained up to 1945). However many of these items were purchased from individuals so a truer picture of the number of items obtained from sale rooms etc would be to total the table above (though there are some organisations listed there which should probably not be included in such a count (because the museum did not purchase them from the dealer etc but an intermediary owner)). This total is 9,347 (5 per cent of the total collections up to 1945).

How much did Balfour purchase?

You could posit that probably there was far more purchased during Balfour's time in museum than afterwards so we researched into this, searching the 'up to 1945 database' for purchased in acquired field and omitted all entries with 194 in accession number field [because this was post his death] in PRM source field which gives total numer of objects of 36,707.

Total number of purchased items 1884 - 1939 = 36,707

Total number of purchased items 1884 - 1945 = 37,929

percentage obtained 1884 - 1,939 = 96.7%

So during Balfour's 'reign' we obtained 36,707 objects by purchase, after that date we acquired by purchase:

1940s - 1,695

1950s - 780

1960s - 7,863

1970s - 2,458

1980s - 2,680

1990s - 1,112

2000s - 404

Total 1940 - 2003 = 16,992

Which means that over twice as many objects were obtained when Balfour was curator by purchase than they were after his death. However it is impossible to be exact how many of these purchases were instigated by Balfour (though we must assume that a great number were), or how many he actually paid for (as opposed to using Museum or University funds).
