Named field collectors

The shape of their collections up to 1945

[article ID:442]

We have calculated these using the 'up to 1945' database, for Balfour in particular this will mean that the total number of objects given in the field collector tables do not match these figures in any way as they were calculated using the on-line up to 2003 database which includes a large number of Balfour material which was found post his death unentered. For this reason (and in order to work out what percentages of particular collections each class represents) we have calculated the total number of objects up to 1945 based on the 'up to 1945' database which is given at the end of the table.

Readers are reminded yet again that a single object can, of course, have more than one class assigned to it during the cataloguing and accessioning process, therefore we have taken great care not to add together classes and set them against the total number of objects in our summary unless we have excluded any double counting between categories.

** - Calculated by typing in name Tylor into PRM source field, so that it catches both the items donated directly by EBT but also those donated after his death by Anna Tylor.

Just to show what difference there potentially is working even on named collector statistics between using the 'up to 1945 database' and the on-line objects prm database, here are the corresponding totals up to 2003

Obviously all the classes would also be slightly different, the differences are due to those items accessioned after 1945 from these collectors (like BB who worked after 1945) or found unentered items (from people like Balfour and Pitt Rivers who we are still finding masses of objects that were accessioned from during Court Project). Note that because these figures were worked out on the live database on 16.10.03 they are likely to change in the future.

Significan items (those that constitute over 10 per cent of the collection by the named donor) are marked in red

Summary

[article ID:444]

The only class which is important for all named collectors are tools. Ornaments and beads are favoured by 3 collectors (Tylor, Pitt Rivers and Blackwood) and Religious items by Tylor and Balfour. Weapons and items which could be either tools or weapons are also common for at least two of the collectors.
