Charles Seligman Beatrice Blackwood PRM Museum John Hutton Henry Balfour Edward Tylor Augustus Fox

Named collectors up to 1945 Pitt Rivers Part II -

other people assocatiated with the Pitt Rivers founding collection

8. Named field collectors and other owners who contributed to the Pitt Rivers collection

[article ID:341]

Notes to accompany the following table:

Note that this is the first statistical table we have produced on Pitt Rivers as a collector (or donor) or any other field collector associated with him that gives the number of objects directly given by him from each person (sometimes objects from the same collector were given by a different source) but, more importantly, it also is the only table ever (to date) that gives the date or suggested date by which Pitt Rivers obtained the object. Even the dates on the database do not always give this information in this form.

NB we have not included Bethnal Green Museum as an other owner because the Pitt Rivers collection was only loaned to them. It would be possible to look separately at the objects that had been displayed there, but that does not seem appropriate at this juncture.

* - all field collectors are by default also other owners, where it indicates someone is an Other Owner it means that they definitely [or most probably] did not field collect.

* Note that Christy and Lartet actually collected most of these collections together, these items are therefore double counted.

Pitt Rivers himself field collected a quarter of the 17,802 objects he donated as the founding collection. Out of the 235 total number of individuals who also contributed to the founding collection either as field collectors or as other owners

100 collectors (42.5%) gave one object each

167 collectors (71%) gave five objects or less

203 collectors (86.3%) gave twenty objects or less

No collectors (apart from Pitt Rivers himself) gave anything like 10 per cent of the founding collection, or of the overall PRM collection up to 1945. Only Pitt Rivers himself could be said to be a significant field collector by size of collection in the overall museum collection
